DES MOINES, Iowa — An arrest has been made in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a man earlier this week in Des Moines.
Mario Campos, 44, is charged with homicide by vehicle-OWI and leaving the scene of an accident causing death for the crash that killed 53-year-old Andrew Verwers on June 23rd. Campos was arrested Thursday night.
Criminal complaints filed in the case said Verwers was sitting on the concrete median at Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road around 8:17 p.m. when a Dodge Ram truck drove over the median, knocked down a traffic sign, and struck Verwers before fleeing the scene. Verwers was transported to Methodist Hospital but died from his injuries.
Officers located the truck a short time later in the 2500 block of 44th Street. The complaint said officers spoke with Campos, who admitted to being the driver of the truck at the time of the crash.
Officers detected the odor of alcohol coming from Campos and said he had slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes. Campos admitted to drinking alcohol and performed field sobriety testing for officers, who noted multiple clues of impairment. A preliminary breath test indicated a breath alcohol concentration of more than the legal limit, which is .08 in Iowa.
Campos is being held in the Polk County Jail.
