Multiple pedestrians injured in separate Des Moines crashes

DES MOINES, Iowa — Multiple pedestrians were injured when they were struck by vehicles in Des Moines on Thursday.

According to Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department, there were seven crashes within a two-hour period in the city during the storms that rolled through, with some of those crashes being pedestrians vs. vehicles.

At 4 p.m. Sgt. Parizek said rescue personnel responded to the intersection of East 24th Street and Jefferson Avenue for a car vs. bicycle crash. The bicyclist, identified as a child, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Nearly a half hour later, rescue personnel responded to a crash involving a car and two pedestrians. Sgt. Parizek said that the two pedestrians, an adult male and his teenage son, were crossing the road in the 2800 block of Forest Avenue when a westbound car hit them. Both were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Shortly before 5 p.m. rescue personnel responded to another vehicle vs. bicycle crash, this time near 6th Avenue and Cherry Street. Sgt. Parizek said that the bicyclist, identified as an adult male, was struck by a pickup truck that then fled the scene. The bicyclist was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

According to Sgt. Parizek, each of the injured persons are expected to survive and each of the crashes remain under investigation.
