AMES, Iowa — The City of Ames has opened a long-planned housing development to boost affordable housing in the city.
The 38 units will be a mix of multi-family and single-family units. The $13 million development is designed to serve residents earning less than 50% of the area median income.
The rental units are priced lower than other rentals, and the purpose is to move residents toward owning a home some day. The development firm Kiernan Hatch and Galloway took on the project after the city has been working on the project for around ten years.
“On behalf of my partner’s, Jack Hatch and Ryan Galloway along with our families, would like to say thank you for making us part of this project,” said Michael Kiernan. “It’s just a remarkable story of the city of Ames, which has been on this journey for more than a decade trying to create affordable housing.”
The development is named the Baker Subdivision, after Vanessa Baker-Latimer, long-time Housing Director for the City of Ames. She started working for the city in 1983.
“Vanessa’s expansive knowledge strategic vision, her efforts, have greatly shaped the landscape of housing developed within the city, leaving enduring legacy of progress and compassion,” said Ames Mayor John Haila. “Today, she’s being proudly honored for her exceptional contributions, outstanding service and the lasting positive impact she has had our community.”
