Another round of storms possible for central Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — The focus of heavy rain in the last 24 hours was northwest Iowa. Strong storms developed in northern and northwest Iowa and led to a few severe storms and flash flooding. Estimates show a thin band of heavy rainfall just north of Fort Dodge in Humboldt County, down to the southwest in Creston. 1 to 3″ is estimated in that area.

An area of low pressure and a cold front will cross the state today. Out ahead of the front, it will be warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s and dewpoints in the 70s.

Storms will fire up first in northwest Iowa and move across northern Iowa. As they move into northeast Iowa, they could strengthen and become severe. That’s where the best chance of severe storms will be today.

Storms will develop southwestward into western Iowa through midday and arrive in Central Iowa between 4 and 7 PM. In Central Iowa, the risk of a severe storm is lower, but not zero.
