DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department has released the name of the pedestrian who was killed after being hit by a truck earlier this week.
On Monday night the DMPD and the Des Moines Fire Department responded to a pedestrian vs. vehicle crash near the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the victim with critical injuries and transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite lifesaving measures, the victim, now identified as 53-year-old Andrew E. Verwers, died from his injuries.
According to the DMPD, witnesses reported that Verwers was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup, which was traveling eastbound on Hickman when it jumped the median and struck Verwers who was standing on the median. The truck fled from the scene but was later tracked down in the 2500 block of 44th Street, police said.
Earlier that night the DMPD said the same truck was reported to another agency for reckless driving after allegedly crossing the center line and hitting a curb.
The name of the driver has not been released and police said that no charges have been filed. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
