Charges filed in Newton death investigation after body found during search warrant execution

NEWTON, Iowa — Four people have been charged in connection to a death investigation in Newton where a Des Moines man was found dead in a home during the execution of a search warrant.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on June 9 multiple law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at a home in the 1200 block of N 4th Avenue in Newton. While executing the search warrant, law enforcement personnel discovered the body of 66-year-old Tomie Lee Misner Jr. of Des Moines. Misner’s cause of death has not been released.

On Wednesday, the Newton Police Department announced the arrest of four individuals in connection to Misner’s death. All of the four following individuals have been charged with abuse of a corpse and obstruction of prosecution or defense.

  • Jeffrey Alan Stevens, 53, of Newton
  • Scott Ray Mabrier, 63, of Des Moines
  • Thomas Patrick Olofson, 47, of Hudson
  • Alysha Anne Buell, 36, of Des Moines

According to Newton police, the four suspects were either allegedly involved with trying to hide or destroy evidence, trying to hide and dispose of Misner’s body, or failing to notify authorities of his death.

The investigation into Misner’s death is ongoing.
