Man dies after being hit by truck in Merle Hay neighborhood

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man who was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in the Merle Hay neighborhood has died from his injuries.

Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said emergency responders were called to Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road shortly after 8:00 p.m. on a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.

When first responders arrived, they found an adult male suffering from critical injuries. The man was transported to UnityPoint-Iowa Methodist Medical Center, but despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Sgt. Parizek said witnesses reported that the victim was standing on the median and was hit by a pickup. The driver fled the scene in the truck.

The truck believed to be involved in the crash, a 2020 Dodge Ram, was located a short time after the crash in the 2500 block of 44th Street.

Police have identified the driver, an adult male. They have not released his name and say no charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation into the crash continues, and Sgt. Parizek said more information will be shared as it becomes available.
