Crowd protests US strike on Iran in downtown Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — A crowd assembled in downtown Des Moines to protest the US strike on Iran Sunday evening.

President Trump announced a strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan on Saturday evening. The president later spoke at the White House, saying Iran’s key nuclear sites were “completely and fully obliterated.”

In response, the Party for Socialism and Liberation hosted a “No War on Iran” rally outside the Neal Smith Federal Building in downtown Des Moines. Over 100 people gathered around 6:30 p.m., with some remaining till dark.

During the protest, speakers shared their reaction to the news, their opinions on President Trump and Iowa’s lawmakers, and the need for democrats to take a stand.

“All the emotions came out in one fell swoop, and anger, fear, disgust, bitterness, empathy were just pouring out,” said Xavier Carrigan, a protester at the event.

“I thought it was a travesty. I couldn’t believe that Donald Trump would escalate something so serious and important as the security of sovereignty of another country,” said Kanai Johnson, an organizer for the event.

“What really frustrates, frustrates me more than anything else is how slow the Democrats have been to react to any of this. How few have even mentioned the words impeachment,” said Carrigan.

“I don’t believe in going to war with countries. I believe that all the money that we spend to bring destruction and death to other countries, we can use that here. On health care, education or housing to provide for the people,” said Johnson.

Similar protests took place across the country on Sunday with crowds expressing their concerns about the bombings and President Trump’s military actions.
