Forecast: From steam to storms

DES MOINES, Iowa — We again set a record warm low in Des Moines Sunday, extending our streak to two days. We stay hot into Monday afternoon as a heat advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Monday. Then clouds and repeated storm chances bring temperature changes.

Northwest Iowa is in a slight risk area for severe weather Sunday night as a cold front approaches the area, and that front and the risk area slide southeast into central Iowa Monday. Wind and hail will be the main threats, and we’ll be here to keep you informed. Colorado State’s severe weather algorithm keeps at least a tiny severe chance in the upper Midwest through Sunday. The Stormpath slideshow below takes you through storm timing.

Both the European computer model (below left) and the Weather Prediction Center’s seven-day outlook show the potential for very heavy rain totals through next weekend. Temperatures stay warm, as the slideshow below demonstrates.

Your WHO 13 7-day forecasts are above. The extended outlooks below keep us in the warmth and a wet pattern through the beginning of July.
