Iowa State Fair announces ‘animated’ butter cow companion sculpture

DES MOINES, Iowa — Thirty years after the first Toy Story movie came out, the iconic franchise will be celebrated in butter this summer at the Iowa State Fair.

The Fair announced on its Facebook page Thursday that the companion sculpture to the iconic Butter Cow will be a likeness of Andy’s room and some of the characters from Toy Story. Some other hidden gems related to the fair will be hidden in the sculpture.

Butter sculptor Sarah Pratt and her daughters, Hannah and Grace, will create the spectacle based on the beloved series of animated movies. The Butter Cow and the Toy Story exhibit will be available to view from August 7-17 at the Agriculture Building on the fairgrounds.

Following the fair, a replica of the butter cow will be displayed at the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. It’s part of a project named “State Fairs: Growing American Craft,” which has been in the works for five years, involving 15 states. That exhibit will be open from August 22, 2025 to September 7, 2026.
