DES MOINES, Iowa — Juneteenth celebrations started on Thursday and will go into the weekend.
People gathered at the State Historical Building in Des Moines for the Juneteenth Jubilee.
The event featured a historical Juneteenth display, a community forum discussion, community and scholarship awards, a silent auction and music.
This is Iowa Juneteenth’s 35th year officially celebrating in the state. Because of that, they’re trying to raise $35,000.
The theme this year is: “Remembering Our History, Release the Past, Celebrate Our Future”.
The festivities continue on Saturday at Western Gateway Park for the Iowa Juneteenth Observation Neighbor’s Day Celebration. There will be live entertainment, food, children’s activities, local business shopping and more.
