DES MOINES, Iowa – Two people were transported to the hospital following an apartment fire in Des Moines’ River Bend neighborhood early Thursday morning.

Captain Stacia Swanson of the Des Moines Fire Department said firefighters responded to a structure at 1800 9th Street around 1:50 a.m.

The fire was contained in about 30 minutes. It appears the fire started in the basement of the building, which houses multiple rental units.

Capt. Swanson said a male and a female were transported to a Des Moines hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The fire remains under investigation.
