WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — The search for a missing swimmer resumed Monday morning at Raccoon River Park.
Sgt. Dan Wade of the West Des Moines Police Department said emergency responders were dispatched to the designated swimming area at the park’s Blue Heron Lake at 5:27 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report about a possible drowning.
Sgt. Wade said a witness told officials they saw an 18-year-old male swimmer go under the water in the designated swimming area, and he didn’t surface. Officials have not released the name of the missing swimmer.
The West Des Moines Fire Department searched with boats, and a dive unit from the Des Moines Police Department was also called in to help, but the search was suspended at nightfall Sunday.
The WDMFD launched boats Monday morning, and crews are continuing to search. Sgt. Wade said the DMPD dive team will also return to assist in the search on Monday. The focus of the search is the designated swimming area.
Sgt. Wade said the beach and swimming area will remain closed during the search.
Officials have not released the name of the missing swimmer.
