Man traveling 114mph leads Iowa State Patrol on chase

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Clive man traveling 114mph led Iowa State Patrol officers on a chase across Interstate 235 early Saturday morning.

According to court documents, just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, an Iowa State Patrol officer stationed on I-235 at mile marker 10 recorded the defendant going 106mph on LIDAR in a posted 55mph zone. The officer says the defendant didn’t slow down and was then recorded going 114mph in a 60mph zone on RADAR, court records state. The officer observed the driver pass two vehicles on the shoulder of the interstate.

The officer activated their lights and siren and began pursuing the defendant, according to court records. The defendant continued to travel at speeds more than 100mph in a posted 65mph zone, court records state. The chase ran on Interstate 235 before continuing onto Interstate 80, then Highway 65, and exiting at Hubble Avenue, court documents state.

According to court documents, the defendant continued to elude officers and failed to stop at red lights while weaving around traffic. The defendant continued to drive at speeds over 100mph on Hubble Avenue before losing control of the vehicle, driving over the curb, and disabling his vehicle at I-235 and 6th Avenue, court documents state.

The driver was then taken into custody by officials. The defendant admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages before operating the motor vehicle, and an unopened can of beer was found in the car, according to court documents. The defendant consented to a breath test indicating a BAC of .129, court documents state.

Court documents state that the defendant’s driver’s license was barred as a habitual offender beginning September 2024.

18-year-old Edwin Torres was taken into custody and charged with,

  • Eluding, Speeding 25 Over the Limit
  • Driving While Barred
  • Operating While Under the Influence, 1st Offense
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving in Improper Lane/Wrong Direction Prohibited
  • Speeding Over 55 Zone, 21 or over
  • Possession of Alcohol by Person Underage, 1st Offense

Torres was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being held on a $8,000 bond.
