WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — The body of a swimmer who went under the water at Raccoon River Park’s Blue Heron Lake Sunday and didn’t surface has been located.
Sgt. Dan Wade of the West Des Moines Police Department said the body of the 18-year-old male was found around 10:15 a.m. Monday.
Crews from the West Des Moines Fire Department resumed their search earlier Monday morning after the search was suspended Sunday night due to darkness.
Sgt. Wade said emergency responders were initially dispatched to the designated swimming area at the park’s Blue Heron Lake at 5:27 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report about a possible drowning.
A witness told officials they saw an 18-year-old male swimmer go under the water in the designated swimming area, and he didn’t come back up.
The dive team from the Des Moines Police Department assisted in the search.
The name of the drowning victim is not being released at this time in order to allow the family to make notifications.
