DES MOINES, Iowa — Across the country, corporate donors have pulled their support for Pride month events, and one local group said they have also seen changes.
Capital City Pride is a nonprofit that organizes LGBTQ+ events throughout the year, including PrideFest, which took place last weekend.
Laurel Feaks, the director of public relations for Capital City Pride, said the nonprofit lost around $70,000 worth of funding this year, likely as a result of political pressures surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Despite the loss from corporate sponsorships, the group did gain new donors, which helped offset the loss. During their recent March gala, the group raised roughly $120,000 in donations, while last year’s raised around $80,000. Individual donors also doubled this year from 40 to over 80.
Feakes also said that local donors, like Bud & Mary’s and Google, have increased their donations.
“It’s been nice to see people still rally, still care, and I think in times like these, if you have the ability to do that, you should,” said Feakes.
