RACE UPDATES: 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS — Race day has arrived at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

Storylines abound. Rookie Robert Shwartzman of Prema Racing won the pole, becoming the first rookie to do so in more than four decades. Back-to-back winner Josef Newgarden is seeking his third straight Indy 500 win, but he’ll start from the last row after his car failed inspection during qualifying last week and led to a penalty.

Longtime 500 favorite Helio Castroneves is racing against history as he tries to become the first driver in the event’s storied history to win five times. NASCAR’s Kyle Larson is chasing some history of his own, first racing in Indianapolis before heading to Charlotte for NASCAR’s Coca-Cola to make a run at “The Double.”
