What weather to expect for the Memorial Day weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa – After a week with plenty of rain and cool conditions, more of the same is on the way for the unofficial start to summer.

The past week more than made up for our rainfall deficit. Des Moines has now picked up 5.24″ of rain for the month of May, almost an inch and a half more than normal. The yearly precipitation total still sits at a deficit compared to normal, but that deficit is now less than three-quarters of an inch.

Several more rain chances are in store heading into the holiday weekend. Clouds build in through the day on Friday. By the late afternoon and early evening hours, some showers are possible across the state. Rain chances last into the overnight hours. Most of these showers should be fairly light and scattered.

Showers should be wrapped up before sunrise on Saturday. Clouds will still hang around for most of the day, followed by a few more spotty showers Saturday afternoon and evening. Rain showers linger through the overnight and into Sunday morning. The rest of Sunday looks a little clearer and mostly dry. Rain chances over the weekend will be greatest in southwest Iowa, but spotty showers are still possible in other locations across the state.

It’s worth emphasizing again that rain showers this weekend will be light and pretty spotty. Most locations will see less than a tenth of an inch of rain. Some higher totals are possible in southwest Iowa.

Additional rain chances continue into next week, including on Memorial Day. However, these rain chances will be very similar to this weekend, meaning they will be light and fairly spotty. Expected rain totals for the next week are less than half an inch across the entire state.
