COLFAX, Iowa – Businesses come and go, but one greenhouse has remained a steady force in the town of Colfax, all while maintaining the same family ownership.
Reed’s Greenhouse is in its second generation of ownership. The business was started by the father of the current owner, Donna. Many members of the family help out in planting, taking care of the plants, and helping customers when it’s that time of the year. Kids and parents alike have fond memories of playing in the dirt.
The greenhouse has cultivated a loyal customer base, with some customers coming back for around 50 years. Others seem to stumble across Reed’s unaware of its constant presence in Colfax.
Family members mention that they often hear people compliment the plants, reaping the results of their careful caretaking. They point to the constant care they’re able to offer the plants compared to other stores where planting and growing aren’t the main focus. They also like being able to offer the Colfax community a local option, cutting out the need to drive to Newton, Altoona, or Des Moines.
Reed’s Greenhouse is open seasonally. The family says the best time to visit is in April and early May. Lots of plants are sold around Mother’s Day. A sale is usually held around the end of May to get rid of any remaining plants.
You can visit the greenhouse at 3353 S Walnut St. in Colfax.
