Iowa man killed in I-35 crash involving semis

DES MOINES, Iowa — One person died in a multi-vehicle crash involving semis Tuesday afternoon in Hamilton County.

The Iowa State Patrol says the crash happened around 2:42 p.m. near Mile Marker 147 in the southbound lanes of I-35. According to the ISP crash report, a northbound Ford Fiesta driven by 68-year-old Reed Peterson of Mason City crossed the median and hit the rear trailer tires of a southbound Volvo semi and then was struck by a Freightliner semi.

The engine block from the Fiesta was dislodged by the collision with the Freightliner and was struck by a GMC Yukon driven by Caleb Jacobsen, 23, of Dows.

The Yukon and the Freightliner both ended up in the west ditch. The Volvo stopped on the shoulder, and the Fiesta stopped in the inside lane.

Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Everyone else involved in the crash was treated and released on the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
