Spring soaker: How much rain fell over Iowa last night

Des Moines had a good soaking rain for the first time since July of last year! On Monday night as of midnight, the Des Moines airport received 3.74″ of rain (with more coming after midnight). The last significant rain of this magnitude was 3.55″ on July 31, 2024.

Here’s a look at some of the day-and-a-half rain totals through 8 AM Tuesday. These totals include the rain from Monday morning all the way through Tuesday morning.

  • Grinnell 1.71″
  • Chariton 1.53″
  • Hampton 1.52″
  • Newton 1.51″

We also had numerous hail reports as severe storms lifted out of northern Missouri. They moved north along I-35 up to Des Moines and just east of Ames. We had a few gusty wind reports northwest of Ames.
