Forecast: Here comes the rain

DES MOINES, Iowa — We’ve warmed nicely on a beautiful Sunday with sunshine and light winds. As you probably know, changes are ahead. Your weather timeline walks you through them:

Storms look to move in late Sunday night, and the Storm Prediction Center’s outlooks and Colorado State University’s algorithm below point to chances for a few strong storms in the far southwest early Monday, and in southwest and south-central Iowa late Monday afternoon into early evening.

A Stormpath slideshow is below. Rain looks to move in after 1 a.m. and continue roughly until 8 a.m. Monday in central Iowa before a break. Another wave will move through in the afternoon, with the third and strongest one coming through in the evening. Hail will be the main threat here. We’ll also need to watch for street flooding in the metro.

Rain chances continue until roughly midday Tuesday, then most of the rain will lift north of Interstate 80 Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. A spotty shower is still possible in the south. Rain chances diminish (but not to zero) Thursday, and we hope to see sunshine again by late afternoon. Friday and Saturday look nice to start the holiday weekend before the possible return of rain next Sunday, May 25.

Both the Weather Prediction Center and the European computer model give us good, much-needed totals through Thursday. Hydrologists will be monitoring rivers in southeast Iowa (below) to see how far levels rise.

Highs for the next six days and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts follow:

It appears we’ll stay cooler than average for the rest of May. Indications are, however, looking warmer than average for June.
