Wednesday night yacht races take sail at Saylorville Lake

POLK CITY, Iowa – Central Iowa sailors have been taking advantage of the warm weather.

Members of the Saylorville Yacht Club have been participating in the organization’s Spring Series races.

On Wednesday night, roughly six yachts of all sizes- from 16 feet to 34 feet- made it around the Polk County lake using their sails. It was the third race of the Spring season.

Jerry Giebelstein, who has been a member for thirty years, said the hobby takes a lot of different components.

“The nerves. You’re jockeying for the boats at the start and don’t want to hit anybody, but you got right-aways and stuff, and got to follow the rules,” he said/ “So, you got to have good sails and good sailors.”

Giebelstein said the friendly competition usually takes a couple of hours every week on Wednesdays and sometimes ends with an on-deck barbecue as the sun sets.
