Forecast: Rain for some, then cooler temps

DES MOINES, Iowa — We’ve warmed a bit more today, after nearly identical weather Sunday through Tuesday. Your weather timeline walks you through changes ahead.

Lows tonight stay warm, ahead of storm chances for some. The best chance for rain will be in northwest Iowa, though we may see a couple of spotty showers or storms in central Iowa after midnight tonight as an area of low pressure crosses the state. Stormpath shows timing below.

Winds will be strong on Thursday, gusting in excess of 40 mph in places. We may again see a spotty shower in central Iowa Friday morning as temperatures cool on another breezy day.

Rain totals from this system will not be impressive, and most accumulation will be confined to the north. Highs for the next six days and your cooling trend are below.

We enter the second half of May in your 7-day and extended forecasts below. Again, it appears the second half of the month will be cooler than the first.

It’s been a quiet month for severe weather in our part of the state, though we may get a bit busier Monday night through Wednesday of next week, as seen in Colorado State’s severe algorithm below. An area of low pressure will again move through our neck of the woods, kicking off thunderstorms.

The supercell composite image from the GFS model below shows what could be a busy Tuesday afternoon for southern Iowa next week. We’ll keep an eye on things.

Extended forecasts from the national blend of models, the European computer model, and the Climate Prediction Center keep us around or a little below average temperature-wise to round out the month.
