DES MOINES, Iowa — One of the suspects in a home invasion robbery in Des Moines last week has been arrested, and police are still looking for three others.
Court documents reveal the incident happened on May 1st, around 7:30 p.m. at a home in the 3300 block of 8th Street. Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson of the Des Moines Police Department, said a family reported four people, one armed with a handgun, entered the victim’s home and stole about $60,000 in cash.
The criminal complaint said a 16-year-old in the home had posted a photo on social media of about $60,000 in cash, of his mother’s money. The teenage victim told police he knew who the suspect with the gun was and identified 18-year-old Mohamed Abukar.
The victim said Abukar bit his arm during a struggle, and he gave the man the money because he feared for his life.
Sgt. Parizek said a search warrant served Wednesday led to the recovery of a substantial amount of cash and the arrest of Abukar. He is charged with first-degree robbery and is being held in the Polk County Jail.
Parizek offered advice to residents about keeping large amounts of cash in the home.
“While having some cash on hand could be helpful at some point, there is a lot of risk that comes with keeping large sums of cash in your home. The risk of fire, or theft, and the possibility that your insurance company may not cover a large loss of cash, makes a bank or other financial institution a much safer option.”
The investigation continues, and more arrests are expected in the case.
