DES MOINES, Iowa — After playing in the State Championship game last year, the first-ranked Hoover High School Boys Soccer team has forfeited its first eight games of the season.
The move comes after the Iowa High School Athletic Association determined one of the players was too old to play. The student in question was 20 years old.
Hoover’s director of activities and school equity released a statement to parents on April 25, saying that the situation was not the player’s fault but a misunderstanding of documentation and eligibility requirements.
“Once it was brought to my attention, I did some investigating. I went to the systems that we have in place and verified that the actual date of birth was what it was in our system. After doing more of a deep dive, I found out that there was a form that I needed to investigate, which is called an I-94, and that I-94 stated a different birthday. It’s not necessarily an uncommon occurrence based on the fact that we deal with a population of refugees and immigrants, and a lot of times, they come from countries where the documentation does not follow along with them,” said Charles Zanders, Hoover High School Director of Activities.
You can view the letter Zanders sent about the situation below:

The forfeits mean Hoover drops out of the rankings entirely.
All teams qualify for the playoffs, and Zanders says the Huskies will be fine.
