CRAWFORD COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources estimates around 500 gallons of wastewater entered the Boyer River on Sunday.
Early Sunday morning, a valve malfunction at Smithfield Fresh Meats Corporation in Denison led to approximately 500 gallons of wastewater entering Boyer River. The DNR says their Field Office in Atlantic was notified by the company shortly after.
The wastewater was able to flow through an open storm drain and discharge into the Boyer River. Smithfield staff found the issue and closed the storm drain, halting any further wastewater release.
Cleanup efforts are ongoing, the DNR advises the public to avoid contact with the Boyer River. No dead fish have been reported, according to the DNR. The DNR will evaluate appropriate enforcement action following the conclusion of its investigation.
To report a release after hours, please call the DNR’s emergency spill line at (515) 725-8694. Quick reporting can help DNR staff identify the cause of an incident. The DNR website has more information about spill reporting requirements.
