Champions crowned during final day of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa — The final day of the 2025 Drake Relays brought many exciting races for fans and participants.

Waukee northwest girls finished first in three different races Saturday, winning the 4×400 meter, Girls’ Shuttle Hurdles, and Girls’ 4×100.

Avery Winter, a runner on the Waukee Northwest Girls’ 4×400 meter relay team, said that the Drake Relays are a warmup for the State Meet.

“I think it was just really showing all the hard effort that we put in year round. We’re always working towards these big meets, but once again, big means State. This is just another step to complete the best what you can today and work through any hiccups that you’re going to have.” Winter said.

The Johnston High School Boys’ Track and Field team also had an impressive performance at the Drake Relays where they won both the 4×100 meter race and the 4×400 meter race.

The Johnston High School Boys’ Track and Field team broke a Drake Relays record with their 4×400 meter time.

Jashua Anglo, the anchor on the Johnston Boys’ 4×400 meter relay team, said that his teammates put him in a position to win the race.

“As soon as I saw Urness come in here with the stick, I knew it was over because they were just in such good position from the beginning of the run till the end. We were perfect position and if we weren’t passing the stick first it close enough to first year in the race, That’s what they did. They kept me in the race and we won the race.” Anglo said.
