Kansas State coach brings Olympic gold medalists to Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa — Travis Geopfert, the head coach of Kansas State University’s Track and Field Team, brought gold medal Olympic and Paralympic athlete husband and wife duo Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall with him to the Drake Relays this year.

Geopfert said he has a long history with the Drake Relays.

“This place, this place is just so special to me in so many ways, you know, from from high school to college at northern Iowa. And then I won a couple of Drake Relays decathlon titles and to be back on the blue Oval, you know, coaching at Kansas State now is just, it’s just awesome,” Geopfert said.

Geopfert said he was honored to bring Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall with him to the Drake Relays this year.

“Hunter and Tara they bring this show wherever they’re at and those two just dynamic personalities, unbelievably great people, and I am just so appreciative of them,” Geopfert said.

Geopfert said the Relays help inspire the next generation of athletes.

“It’s getting that interest started, you know, and that’s what we walk through here with Hunter and Tara and all these high school kids are waving and excited. And so, you know, those memories, you know, at an early age are invaluable. And I think there’s, there’s so many unbelievably great track and field stars from the state of Iowa. And it’s because of the Drake Relays and that interest in the Drake Relays early,” Geopfert said.
