DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa — The law enforcement personnel involved in a deadly shooting in Dallas County have been identified.
On Tuesday morning a deputy with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office was performing a traffic stop on a vehicle for alleged excessive speeding on Interstate 80 just west of De Soto. During the stop, the sheriff’s office said the driver, 51-year-old Vonderrick Rayford of Wisconsin, exited his vehicle, pulled out a firearm, and began shooting at the deputy.
The sheriff’s office said the shooting prompted a large response from nearby law enforcement agencies, but when personnel from those agencies arrived at the scene Rayford allegedly turned his firearm on them and continued to fire. As a result, law enforcement on scene returned fire, striking and killing Rayford.
On Friday, the sheriff’s office identified the law enforcement personnel who fired their weapons during the shooting. All have been placed on administrative leave.
