GRIMES, Iowa — Late last year the City Council of Grimes decided there would be a change. The contract with bus service DART was terminated. The reason: too high of a cost for the number of passengers.
“It was about $180 per ride, which just doesn’t make sense financially to continue,” said Whitney Tucker, with the City of Grimes. “In November 2023, our council voted to withdraw from DART, they were a great partner in our community, but ultimately not that many people were using the service and it just didn’t make sense financially.”
So, the city is now going with HIRTA, which will provide an on-demand transport service. Riders can book rides by calling, booking on-line, or using the app. HIRTA serves seven counties in central Iowa, including Dallas County.
“I like HIRTA a lot because you can get around and takes you where you need to go,” said John Galloway, a HIRTA rider from Waukee. “I usually go to HIRTA if I want to go get something to eat right around the corner sometimes I’ll even take HIRTA to Prairie Meadows.”
The HIRTA service will begin in June.
