DES MOINES, Iowa — The debate action slowed the last two weeks as both chambers start to focus on funding the state for the next year. Iowa Senate Republicans advanced a bill that would create a center for intellectual freedom at the University of Iowa.
The function of the center, as described by the bill, would be to offer a course in American history and civil government, offer university-wide programming to the values of free speech and civil discourse, and more. This center will coordinate with the center for cyclone civics at Iowa State University and the center for civic education at the University of Iowa to make sure these courses are available in-person and online.
The bill also creates an advisory council created by the state Board of Regents that overseas the center. The director for the board will submit a report to the Iowa Legislature by the end of the year 2026 to give an idea of the scope of work that is ongoing there.
The bill is eligible to be signed into law by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds as it has passed through both chambers.
