Family displaced following Des Moines house fire

DES MOINES, Iowa — A family is displaced following a house fire in the Capital Park neighborhood that caused serious damage.

According to the Des Moines Fire Department, just after 5 p.m. fire crews were called to the 1400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue on reports of a residential fire with heavy smoke.

DMPD and DMFD arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke and flames engulfing the home. Crews began efforts to knock down the flames in an attempt to enter the home for extinguishment and a search.

Family that was home during the fire made their way out safely before fire crews arrived. No injuries have been reported.

Authorities say the home has not been deemed a complete loss. However, it sustained extensive smoke and fire damage, rendering it uninhabitable.

A preliminary investigation indicates the fire originated in the kitchen and spread throughout the house; the exact cause is not known at this time.
