WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A local nonprofit is hosting a pickleball tournament on Saturday at the Valley Community Center in West Des Moines to raise funds for their organization.
Mary’s Helping Hands is based in West Des Moines and their goal is to help families in need. They provide expecting mothers, fathers, foster parents, etc. with supplies like baby clothing, hygiene products, maternity items, and other essentials. Each bag comes with over 110 items.
Families in need of assistance can apply on their website. They have a no-questions-asked policy and don’t conduct financial checks. Once approved, families would come to their West Des Moines location to pick up their supply bags.
Last year, the organization averaged around 500 clients a month and gave out over 8,000 diapers every month.
This year, they’re projecting to help around 8,000 families.
Mary’s Helping Hands relies heavily on their volunteers. Around 91% of their budget goes purchasing to tangible items. They have around 120 active volunteer members that help organize the donations every month.
The Director of Operations, Tonia Martin, said there are three ways to get involved with the organization:
- donate gently used items
- volunteer
- make a monetary donation
