WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — One person was injured during an apartment fire Friday night in West Des Moines.

According to the West Des Moines Fire Department, around 11:18 p.m. fire crews were called to the 900 block of 9th Street on reports of a structure fire.

Crews arrived on scene at 11:23 p.m. and observed smoke coming from the building. Firefighters entered the apartment and began efforts to extinguish the fire. Fire crews located one victim inside.

The individual was taken outside and transported by West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital. The person sustained serious injuries, according to authorities.

No other units in the apartment building were damaged and no other injuries have been reported. Authorities say the damage is estimated to be around $50,000.

An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the fire.
