DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Iowa State and NFL player JJ Moses received the 2025 Robert D. and Billie Ray Pillar of Character Award tonight at The Ray Center’s All-Star Evening event.
The Robert D. and Billie Ray Pillar of Character Award is given each spring to an individual who demonstrates good character as a role model and reflects former Gov. Robert D. and Billie Ray’s values.
Moses said that returning to Iowa to accept the Robert D. and Billie Ray Pillar of Character Award was a full circle moment.
“It’s a full circle moment because we all know that the NFL stands for not National Football League, but not for long. And so it was important for me that I knew that football was something that I did. But it wasn’t who I was. And I’ve always had a passion to inspire people to, especially our next generation of young leaders. And any time that I can provide hope or inspiration, you never know whose lives you’re going to impact along the way,” Moses said.
After his NFL career Moses worked for the Texans as a team ambassador before becoming the Director of Player Development, helping players transition into and out of their NFL careers.
Moses said that his work off the field has been the most fulfilling.
“As an athlete, you know, playing in sports, you’re playing in front of thousands of fans. You get that adrenaline rush. But more than ever now, I’m in a place in my life where this is more fulfilling because I get a chance to operate, to work with individuals on a day to day basis, helping individuals to grow. And to me, that’s making a lasting impact. And that’s why I’m grateful to be a part of this year’s awards in Des Moines. It’s a testimony to what I stand up and what I believe in,” Moses said.
