Otley’s evacuation/shelter-in-place order lifted following co-op fire

OTLEY, Iowa- The evacuation and shelter-in-place order that was in effect for part of Otley following a hazardous materials fire at the local co-op has been lifted.

A Thursday morning news release from the Pella Fire Department said that emergency response to the fire at Two Rivers Cooperative is officially complete. The fire is out, and the smoke has cleared. The evacuation and shelter-in-place order was lifted at 10:30 a.m.

The original fire began Monday in a fertilizer storage facility at 311 Old Business Highway 163. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the fire at 11:46 a.m.

A portion of the town was under an evacuation and shelter-in-place order because of the burning chemicals in the building. There were 392 tons of Urea, 378 tons of Potash, 36 tons of MAP (Monoammonium Phosphate, and 265 tons of Sulfur. Officials said the burning sulfur could irritate the nose and eyes.

The news release said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tested the air quality for a continuous four-hour period and then intermittently monitored it over 17 hours. The EPA said the collected data helped them determine the air quality is safe.

Marion County Public Safety and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will monitor the site recovery.

Officials are urging anyone who experienced health concerns from the incident to contact their doctor or reach out to Marion County Public Health at 641-828-2238.
