IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former Drake guard Bennett Stirtz announced he’ll be following his former head coach Ben McCollum, and transferring to the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Stirtz, a 6’4 point guard with elite scoring and passing ability won the Missouri Valley Player of the Year award. He averaged 19.2 points and 5.7 assists per game while leading Drake to a conference championship.
Ben McCollum was asked about the possibility of Stirtz joining him at his introductory press conference last week.
“If he’s not the best point guard in the country, he’s top two or three. So that’s pretty good fit right there.” McCollum said.
“But for him specifically, more importantly, is his level of humility. And the other guys that I coached at Drake, exact same. Like just they’re humble people that want to serve and want to grow and get better.”
Stirtz was one of four Northwest Missouri starters to follow McCollum to Drake last spring, and will likely be Iowa’s starting point guard next year.
