ORIENT, Iowa — A field fire spread quickly through Adair County on Friday, burning several acres of farmland and an abandoned home.
According to the Creston Fire Department, just before 2 p.m. Adair County fire crews were called two miles west of Orient on reports of a field fire.
High winds quickly spread the fire, eventually jumping several roadways and advancing to other fields in the area. The Orient Volunteer FD, Greenfield Volunteeer FD, Fontanelle Fire & Rescue, Bridgewater Fire & EMS, and Prescott Fire & Rescue were all called to the scene to assist.
Water tankers worked constantly to refill brush tankers who tackled the field fire while pumper and tankers crews attacked a fire in an abandoned house. Area farmers assisted the efforts by disking fields and creating fire breaks for crews as they battled the flames.
The Creston FD says the fire is believed to have been started from a downed power line, blown over by the wind, eventually spreading into a two-mile line of flames. No injuries have been reported.
Highway 25 was closed for a time due to dense smoke caused by the fire. Adair County is currently under a burn ban.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the fire.
