Des Moines set to host first ever MASLW Champion Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Soccer fans have the opportunity to see history in action at Buccaneer Arena with the debut of the MASLW playoffs.

The announcement made Friday coincides with March being Women’s History Month, and adds to the state’s legacy of firsts for women with Des Moines hosting the tournament.

To celebrate the landmark moment for women’s sports, Mayor Connie Boesen was joined by soccer leaders and advocates at Buccaneer Arena, and spoke about how this weekend will inspire other young female athletes.

“We look forward to the many years and the growth of your organization and the excitement that you bring because what I found as the first women Mayor is that young women look up to me understanding that anything is possible, and you will be doing that for a whole group of young women who thought maybe if they don’t want to play outside, maybe this is a whole other avenue and more opportunities for people to play the sport that you love,” said Mayor Boesen.

The owner of the Demon Hawks, Darwin Salas, spoke about how special hosting the tournament is for Des Moines.

“It’s a dream come true, to be able to not only host the Major Arena Soccer League Women’s first year in the making for the league with great competition, but being able to host it here in Des Moines.”
