DES MOINES, Iowa — Police are releasing more information about an officer-involved shooting that happened last week in Des Moines.
Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department, said the officer who shot an assault suspect while trying to detain him is Senior Police Officer Chad Ruroden. SPO Ruroden has been with DMPD since 2001.
The shooting happened on March 20th as officers were investigating a report of an assault in the Watrous South neighborhood. Officers responded around 4:34 p.m. and witnessed 19-year-old Jose Daniel Rodriguez-Sanchez allegedly assault a woman, later determined to be his mother, near SW 9th Street and Rittenhouse Street. Rodriguez-Sanchez fled after an officer tried to intervene.
Shortly after, SPO Ruroden found Rodriguez-Sanchez at the intersection of SW 11th Street and Wade Street. Sgt. Parizek said SPO Ruroden had his handgun drawn and ordered Rodriguez-Sanchez to surrender, but he charged the officer and began violently assaulting him.
During the assault, SPO Ruroden fired his handgun, and Rodriguez-Sanchez was hit in the upper torso. The officer retreated, but Sgt. Parizek said Rodriguez-Sanchez continued to attack. SPO Ruroden fell to the ground and was assaulted until other officers arrived on the scene. Pepper spray and a taser were used on Rodriguez-Sanchez in order to take him into custody.
Sgt. Parizek said there was evidence that Rodriguez-Sanchez tried to disarm SPO Ruroden of his gun during the assault.
Emergency care was provided on scene for Rodriguez-Sanchez by police until medics with the Des Moines Fire Department arrived. He was taken to a Des Moines hospital for treatment, where he remains. Sgt. Parizek said he is expected to recover.
SPO Ruroden was hurt in the incident, suffering injuries to his head and jaw. He was treated at the hospital and released.
Rodriguez-Sanchez has been charged with assault on a peace officer with intent to inflict serious injury, disarming a peace officer, domestic abuse assault, and interference with official acts.
SPO Ruroden is on administrative assignment, which is department policy for employees who have been involved in an on-duty significant critical or traumatic incident.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
