Iowa hires Ben McCollum as next head men’s basketball coach

DES MOINES, Iowa — Ben McCollum will be the next head coach for the University of Iowa Men’s Basketball Team.

The hiring was confirmed to the Associated Press by Iowa spokesman Matt Weitzel on Monday.

The hire comes after a successful debut season for McCollum as Drake University’s head coach, one that landed the Bulldogs in the NCAA tournament after winning the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake ultimately lost to Texas Tech, 77-64, in the second round.

McCollum will replace Fran McCaffery, who led the Hawkeyes for 15 years and is the winningest coach in the program’s history. He was fired on March 14th, the day after Iowa lost to Illinois 106-94 in the Big Ten Tournament.

McCollum came to Drake in 2024 after 15 years as head coach of Division II Northwest Missouri State. He led the Bearcats to four NCAA DII titles during his tenure and tallied a record of 394-91.

He replaced Darian DeVries who left for the head coaching job at West Virginia, but was recently named Indiana’s head coach.
