Des Moines man accused of beating family members with 30 lbs. dumbbell

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly beating and seriously injuring his family members with a 30 lbs. dumbbell.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, just before 7 a.m. Wednesday officers responded to a report of multiple people injured at a home in the 1200 block of East 14th Street. When officers arrived, they found a 73-year-old woman with critical injuries and a 67-year-old man and a 25-year-old man with serious injuries in the home. Police said all three victims remain hospitalized.

DMPD announced Wednesday afternoon that 25-year-old Andy Vo-Luu Johnson had been arrested and charged in connection to the violent assault. Police said evidence collected showed that Johnston beat the victims with a 30 lbs. dumbbell.

Johnson has been charged with attempted murder, willful injury causing serious injury, and obstruction of emergency communications. He is being held in the Polk County Jail.
