DES MOINES, Iowa — A horse suffering from a head wound and an highly infectious disease was rescued by the Animal Rescue League.
According to the ARL, the 2-year-old horse, named Apollo, arrived at their Second Chance Ranch weak and thin with a head wound. Apollo was also believed to have strangles, a highly infectious disease that causes swelling and abscesses.
Apollo was quarantined while he received treatment, which included several weeks of heavy-duty antibiotics and a special diet to gain weight. While Apollo’s condition has improved, the ARL said he needs to gain another 200 lbs. to be at a healthy weight.
The ARL is asking for the public’s help in ensuring Apollo continues to get the medical care he needs. To donate visit the ARL’s website.
