Another mild and breezy Thursday is in progress in Iowa. Winds will pick up on a warm Friday before we see cooling this weekend. Your weather timeline walks you through it:

Lows Thursday night stay above freezing, setting us up for a warm Friday, but we’ll pay for it with windy conditions.

A red flag warning is in effect for central and southern Iowa Friday, highlighting high fire danger. A wind advisory is in effect in the far north, where relative humidities will be higher and the fire danger lower. Winds will gust in excess of 40 mph at times.

The latest drought monitor was released Thursday, showing dry conditions in many parts of Iowa. We’ve lost our snowpack during this warm week, as shown below. But more rain and snow are coming.

After a cooler weekend, Monday begins with an early morning mix of precipitation before temperatures warm into the 50’s.

Tuesday looks to bring showers and thunderstorms to the state, and the system will bring enough cold air behind it to cause the rain to change over to snow starting Wednesday morning.

The European ensemble model is shown below. More ensemble members producing snowfall in the vertical columns indicates a better snow chance, it appears we have that Monday morning and Wednesday. In short, we’re not done with snow yet.

Turning to temperatures, while it does get cooler Saturday there are no indications of a return to the frigid temperatures of last week. And the extended forecasts below keep us in above-average warmth.
