Des Moines holds groundbreaking for 33-story downtown skyscraper

DES MOINES, Iowa — The official groundbreaking of the 33-story Walnut Tower skyscraper took place on Wednesday.

The skyscraper is going up at 515 Walnut Street in downtown Des Moines and, upon its completion, will be one of the tallest buildings in Iowa.

The tower will replace the Kaleidoscope Mall and will create more than 700 new jobs during its construction.

Once completed, the tower will host 390 residential units, a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments. Residents will be able to utilize a rooftop terrace, a fitness studio, and coffee shop.

During the groundbreaking on Wednesday, several leaders spoke about the importance of this project for Des Moines and its residents.

“We also know that this will help not only with housing providing more housing options, it will be a key talent attraction piece not only to our downtown but for our entire region. It also helps point out the fact that we are all about getting stuff done and making business happen here in our region,” said Tiffany Tauscheck, Greater Des Moines Partnership. “Very few downtowns across the country can say that they are building a 33-story tower right now. But look at us downtown Des Moines. We are making it happen.”

“It is about our commitment to creating a city where opportunity thrives and families can live and grow,” said Connie Boesen, Des Moines Major. “This isn’t just the construction of a building. It represents a vision of our future.”

“We are thrilled to break ground on what will be a truly iconic addition to Downtown Des Moines,” said Joe Teeling, developer and founder of St. Joseph’s Group. “515 Walnut Tower represents more than just a residential development; it is a testament to the city’s growth, energy, and future potential. We believe this project will not only enhance the skyline but also contribute to a thriving Downtown community.”

The 515 Walnut Tower is projected to be complete by the Spring of 2027.
