Politicians, civil rights groups condemn Patriot Front march

DES MOINES, Iowa — Politicians and civil rights groups are speaking out following a march by an extremist group known as Patriot Front that occurred in the East Village on Saturday.

On Saturday, Patriot Front posted on Telegram saying, “Activists are currently demonstrating in Des Moines, Iowa in protest to the mass migration of unassimilable foreigners who have invaded America.”

The group was seen in the East Village and at the State Captial wearing face coverings, carrying flags and banners, and chanting. ‘Reclaim America”, “One Nation Against Invasion”, and “Life, Liberty, Victory” are some of the phrases the group was heard chanting.

According to the FBI, Patriot Front is a far-right splinter group formed by a group of Texas-based neo-Nazis.

“Who created a new blend of traditional white supremacist ideology, alt-right sensibilities and activism, and militia style armed insurrection after quarreling with the original organization,” part of the FBI records read.

The Des Moines Police Department says they were aware of the presence, and did not receive any calls or reports of issues related to the march.

Following the march, politicians and civil rights groups have spoken out condemning the actions of the group.

The Iowa Democratic Chair Rita Hart released a statement Saturday saying

Today, a white supremacist group that primarily exists to spread hate and fear by marching with their flags and hiding their faces with white masks, tried to intimidate Iowans. This group has joined protests that resulted in murder, harassment and chaos in cities like Charlottesville and Nashville. Let me be clear: This group, their scare tactics, and their hate have no place in Iowa.

The Iowa-Nebraska National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) posted on Facebook following the march urging people to remain vigilant.

We have been in communication with legislative officials and law enforcement as we assess this evolving situation. While full details are still emerging, reports indicate that the individuals marching are associated with the national organization known as The Patriot Front. Authorities have reported that they are actively monitoring the situation. Video has surfaced of the group standing in front of the Iowa Capitol building today speaking in opposition to immigration. We urge the community to remain vigilant and to report any concerning activity to law enforcement.

On Sunday, The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) released a statement condemning the march.

“We join all those who seek a society based on justice and mutual respect in condemning any efforts to promote racist hate and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “While even bigots have free speech rights, the majority of Americans also have the right and duty to repudiate hatred and division.”

According to the CAIR website, they are the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization.
