Polk County Sheriff’s Office requests public’s help in solving fatal Union Park shooting

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about the fatal shooting of a Des Moines man at Union Labor Park in October to come forward.

On October 19 at around 7:22 p.m. the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at Union Labor Park in the 4600 block of NW Morningstar Drive. When deputies arrived at the scene they found one person was shot. Life-saving measures were taken, but the man died at the scene. The victim was identified as 46-year-old Michael Carter Jr.

According to the sheriff’s office, when the shooting occurred there was a large crowd of people at the park attending a Mental Health Awareness event. Now, about four months later, the sheriff’s office is asking for people to come forward.

The sheriff’s office said on Tuesday, about four months after the shooting, that the homicide investigation is very active, and are requesting anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
