BUENA VISTA COUNTY, IOWA — For the third time in 2025, the bird flu has been detected in an Iowa turkey flock. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says a commercial flock in Buena Vista has tested positive for H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza.
This is the third time in just six weeks that an outbreak has been reported in 2025. IDALS reports that 13 cases were confirmed in dairy herds in Iowa last year. Cattle can recover from the disease but it is often fatal to birds.
The Governor’s office has approved a disaster declaration to allow IDALS and other state agencies to quickly help with remediation of the flock.
