URBANDALE, Iowa — The Little Hawkeye Conference is looking to expand and a metro school is taking a serious look at making the move.
The issue is on the agenda for next week’s Urbandale School Board meeting as members weigh both the pros and cons of moving.
WHO 13 Sports Director Keith Murphy discusses why Urbandale may choose to leave the CIML (Central Iowa Metro League) and the impact it could have on the conferences involved.
Urbandale is currently a part of the CIML, but it is the smallest school by enrollment and some of the coaches feel like it would be better for the student-athletes to go to a smaller conference where they could compete and win more games and possibly win conference championships.
Some coaches feel like they’re in the current best conference in the CIML and want to play and compete against the very best.
Current CIML teams:
- Dowling Catholic
- Johnston
- Urbandale
- Southeast Polk
- Waukee
- Waukee Northwest
- West Des Moines Valley
- Ankeny
- Ankeny Centennial
Current Little Hawkeye teams:
- Dallas Center-Grimes
- Indianola
- Newton
- Norwalk
- Oskaloosa
- Pella
- Pella Christian
The Little Hawkeye Conference has invited other schools to join but Van Meter, Prairie City-Monroe, and Knoxville have declined. Urbandale, Ames, Des Moines Christian, and Nevada are still weighing the decision.
